Saint Andrew’s Calendar

Devotional Word…..

What Child is This?

As we’ve been pondering this question throughout Advent, I can’t help but think there’s one answer that we haven’t considered yet: I don’t know. By the week before Christmas, we are all fairly certain of who Jesus is and exactly what we expect when we talk about his birth. We know the carols by heart. We know the Christmas story. We know the rituals. But at the heart of Advent is another revelation that might make us a little uncomfortable- maybe we don’t know everything there is to know about who Jesus is.

Advent invites us to consider the mystery of Christ’s birth in new ways. What does it really mean that something holy and divine in nature became human? How does that reality impact my own humanity? What does Jesus’ becoming human have to do with his suffering and death? What do we mean when we talk about Jesus’ coming into this world when the world is still so bleak at times? If you have an easy, go-to answer for any of these questions, I invite you to pause for a moment and sit in the mystery of these claims we are making.

It has been said the opposite of faith is not doubt, but certainty. And as a congregation, we have chosen to gather not around a statement of fact, but a question. As Christmas approaches, may we be faithful enough to move beyond certainty and experience the wonder and mystery of Christ’s coming, with all of the questions it raises.

Christmas Eve Prelude Music
We invite all children and teens to consider sharing a piece for the prelude music to the 4:00 pm Family Worship service on Christmas Eve. The piece does not have to be Christmas themed but can be something you played in a recital. Contact Dr. Will Simpson, will@SALChome.org or 425-746-2529, to participate or for more information.

Advent~Christmas
Our theme is “What Child Is This?” In a short space of time we learn to listen again to the Word of the Lord. To hear the promise and to trust again that God is at work in human history through Jesus, born of Mary. To listen, to see, to learn that the promise is being fulfilled again as Jesus is born anew to us today. Listen! Jesus is coming soon!

Advent Outreach
· MGLSS Uniforms: Each year we have the privilege to clothe 50 students at the Maasae Girls Lutheran Secondary School (MGLSS) in Monduli, Tanzania. See the display in the Narthex/Commons and consider outfitting a girl on her educational journey. A gift of $50 provides a uniform for 2 years. Place cash or check in the envelope provided and put it in the offering plate OR send a check to Saint Andrew’s Lutheran Church, noting “MGLSS UNIFORMS” on the memo line.
· Socks and Knit Hats for Compass Housing Alliance: Dorcas Circle is collecting new white socks and warm hats for Compass Housing Alliance. Donations can be placed in the “Sox Box” in the Narthex/Commons. If you have any questions, contact Linda Willenberg.

You can also submit your pledge online.

Join the Sunday Servers Team: If you typically attend the 11:00 am worship service, please consider volunteering to be an usher, greeter, or lector. The need is greatest for ushers!
