Thinking Toward Sunday – Epiphany 5

Our readings for this coming Sunday invite us to think about the mystery and nearness of God.
In Isaiah and our appointed psalm we read of the awesome wonder and distance of the Creator of the Universe. In our gospel reading we find ourselves drawn into the welcoming presence of God who, in Jesus, not only draws near to us but reaches out and calls us be become disciples.

Implicit within the combination of our assigned readings for this coming Sunday is an unspoken tension that reflects the reality of our lives and the character of God. To paraphrase Reverend Edmund Steimle, the great Lutheran preacher and Union Theological Seminary professor:

God is both far off and near to us. God is far off, unapproachable, mysterious and uncontrollable. And yet, at the same time the New Testament claim is that amazingly, this same unapproachable and mysterious God draws us near and touches us in Jesus. So these two dynamics; the mysterious beyond-ness and the welcoming nearness of God, are always held together in tension.

Our New Testament reading highlights this experience of God as the One-beyond-us who has chosen to come-near-to-us. I give thanks that through Word, Bath and Meal we are gathered and embraced by the Spirit so that we can be the people God is calling us to be – a people and a discipleship community – Growing together in Christ to love and serve all people.
